So a few days ago, our electricity went off in our house! There was a big storm and the power went out at 5:30 am. (It didn't come back on until 3:45 pm). Let me just say, it was most refreshing to not have power for a day. My siblings, Hannah and John, as well as myself enjoyed a day of being "Amish". We declared ourselves Amish in the morning, and the fun didn't stop all day long! We climbed trees in the backyard (okay John climbed a tree and we supported him), we played outside with lawn equipment, and we drove around downtown OP (okay so maybe that's not so Amish). It was really nice to not have any distractions, all we had was each other for entertainment, and that was totally okay with us! I wish we didn't have power more often!
Today, I am headed off to camp! I can't wait, because the environment and electricity there are incredible!! I have an amazing opportunity to be surrounded by people with the most genuine and loving hearts, to serve the Lord by loving his children, and to learn and grow with those around me as we push on towards "the goal of the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus". I cannot wait to go and learn what is in store for me! I think I will have 15 year olds for the first session (some of my girls from last summer hopefully) and I will request 7 year olds for the second session. I. Cannot. Wait.
I will see you all in five weeks!
Until then, enjoy your electricity and live your life with electricity!!!!

Cracker Barrel!
So I was thinking and thinking about what I wanted my second blog post to be about! Very important you know. ;) And I found the perfect answer to that question today!
Right now my family and I (Dad, Hannah, John) are headed back from a great vacation in North Carolina! We really enjoyed our time at the beach, and just relaxing with each other. We did decide to drive there and back from Kansas! Yes, it's a 1200 mile, 20 hour drive. It's very worth it though, we drive when we want to stop somewhere along the way. And we stopped in Cave City, Kentucky home of Mammoth Cave, the biggest underground cave in the WORLD! We explored the cave today, it was incredible! 400 miles of mapped cave, and possibly up to 400 more miles of unexplored cave. We walked about 3 miles underground today and saw some beautiful cave formations! I was really hoping to see a bat, but no such luck.
So anyways, we are staying at a little motel off the highway in Cave City! This city is hilarious, but is complete with a CRACKER BARREL! None of us had ever eaten there, although my brother and Dad said it was gross! But I thought that we should go try it out. So we did. Let me tell you, we all LOVED it! They have a huge menu, and they serve breakfast all day long! While we waited for our table, we talked with the host about his six-year job teaching ESL in China! Teachers are paid A LOT more over there then they are here. Between him and his wife (both teachers) they rented a huge house, had a maid, and he said that he got his hair washed at a barber shop every other day! Isn't that outrageous?! But anyways, then we got our table and ordered our food. It was delicious meal, really good cooking! I got the best Mac N' Cheese ever! And we got to play this Peg Game while we were waiting! Our waiter was really nice, but he did literally throw a bowl of Pinto Beans at my Dad. My Dad is really good natured, so he just shrugged it off. We joke about how we are the clumsy family (especially this trip), because it seems like whenever we are at restaurants we are just throwing things around the table. We told him he fit right in.
Then Cracker Barrel has this store attached to it, lots of great nostalgic items! I got a coffee mug with all the American Presidents on it. Which if you know me, this is my ideal mug. I love the government (both parties), and I love America! I have an American presidents place-mat, but it only goes up to Bill Clinton! It's practically ancient. So this one covers Barack Obama. I am full, happy, and excited for the rest of the journey home tomorrow!
Love to all!

My First Blog Post!
Well I have actually thought about this for awhile. What do I want to say for my first blog post? I narrowed it down to three things:
1. The Purpose of this Blog
2. Books
3. My Dad
1. I wanted to get a blog to share my thoughts, I guess. I am what you call an out-loud processor, so that means that I have to talk with others before I can make decisions or fully understand something. This can be a good and a bad thing. I guess a blog would be a good way to process through some things I encounter on this "journey"- life. I have more recently learned about the importance of doing life with others, a community! I hope to include others in my thoughts and experiences, and join with others in their lives as well!
2. I just finished The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. It was an excellent book! I read in a magazine that it took her 60-some times to get her book published! I really can't believe that a bestseller in the United States got rejected that many times. The book was a real, raw account of Southern housekeepers working for white women. I would highly recommend the book, although I would have liked more of a resolution! But maybe a sequel is in the works, I would like to think so. I think the biggest take-away I had from the book would be that women are women, no matter what they look like, and humans are humans, no matter what they look like. In the book, one housekeeper mentioned invisible lines that are put up in society. Part of the beauty of life is learning how to disregard these lines and accept the beauty of the human race everywhere!
Which brings me to my next book, Enrique's Journey, by Sonia Nazario. It is about a boy who travels across Latin America and Mexico to find his mother in the United States. Something I am really passionate about, that I am sure you will hear more about on this blog is immigration. I am really trying to determine my feelings about it all, since I do believe that people are people everywhere. I have been blessed with a real heart for the Mexican people, and I want to work with them in some capacity in my life. So I am looking forward to reading this book!
3. Happy Father's Day Dad! My Dad has taught me many valuable lessons in my life. I will share two things about my dad:
* I have always admired my Dad's personality- his gentle spirit, wise words, loving heart, funny personality (he certainly doesn't take life TOO seriously), his work ethic, ambition and drive. My Dad has always provided a sturdy role model figure in my life.
* My Dad taught me honesty and trust. Two very important things. I love him so much and am thankful for one day to celebrate him!
